Testimonial: A twin pregnancy, a risky pregnancy... And then? I am strong!
A twin pregnancy resulting from in vitro fertilization involves close medical follow-up due to increased risks, in particular prematurity and placental complications.
My desire to carry this pregnancy to term is not enough for everything to go well: it does not depend on me...
Although it is the dream of many couples to have twins following infertility treatments, I understood at my first pregnancy follow-up why the government program that oversees in-vitro fertilization wants to limit the risks of twin pregnancy (by limiting the number of embryos transferred to 1).
Indeed, it was there that I was told about all the risks my babies ran.
The risk of miscarriage increases with a twin pregnancy: my phobia...
Transfuser/transfusion syndrome: in my case, as there are 2 babies connected to the same placenta (identical twins), there is a 30% risk that one will intercept all the food, leaving the other to dry like a prune. I was told that laser surgery could be attempted in Ste-Justine if this situation occurred. But one thing's for sure, it's very risky for babies. Then, they tell me about the very high risks of premature delivery. 50% of twins are born before 35 weeks of pregnancy. They explain to me that at 24 weeks of pregnancy, babies are viable, but that brain development is not over, as is the development of many major organs. To counter an early birth, there is a good chance that I will be bedridden if I have the slightest sign of shortening my cervix, or any sign of labor.
There is also the risk of giving birth to babies of very low weight, i.e. less than 5 lbs.
After all these explanations that are not at all reassuring, I understand that I am going to war. Against whom, I don't really know, but I will have to fight for my babies to grow well, and this battle creates a lot of stress.
For a beautiful and serene pregnancy, we will go back to...
The advantage (because I have to find them) is that I will have ultrasounds every 2 weeks, this appointment with my 2 coworkers is so magical!
