Intense heat: prevent dehydration

Intense heat periods can be a health risk. However, people living with cystic fibrosis should take some additional precautions in order to safely get through a heatwave period.

First and foremost, it is important to Recognize the signs of dehydration. During hot weather, people with cystic fibrosis may lose more water and salt through perspiration. If you are experiencing more than one of the symptoms below, it may be a medical emergency.

If you don't have access to an air conditioner, there are a few simple ways to cool off, such as staying in air-conditioned places that are accessible to the public, using a fan, taking lukewarm showers, or applying a fresh cloth to your skin.

Signs of possible dehydration*

  • An intense thirst
  • A dry mouth and tongue
  • a dull look and sunken eyes
  • the appearance of a skin fold (when the skin is slightly pinched, it takes a long time to regain its original appearance)
  • dry, cold and pale skin
  • A fever
  • low or dark urine
  • Headaches
  • disorientation or dizziness
  • disorders of consciousness (malaise, dizziness)
  • a change in behavior (restlessness, apathy, great weakness)
